So these past few days as I have not been feeling like blogging, but as I was innocently playing Winterbells, randomly watching whatever my brother is watching, which in this case is Batman Forever, my mom asks me something. Was it true that Susan Mayer (played by Teri Hatcher) in Desperate Housewives had said something about the medical schools in the Philippines? So from there, I googled and read blogs from the Filipino “blogosphere” about this issue.
I found it a bit questionable as to why they mentioned something like that on their show. Maybe it’s because I’m just really slow, but I don’t get why they had to name a country?
I also don’t get why Senators Abante and Biazon would want to ban the show from the country? Nothing can be gained from this, really. And who on earth is Abante? I don’t feel like looking for info about him, either.
Filipinos have to accept the fact that there will be racist jokes about them as we increase in numbers here in North America. Even though racist jokes are wrong, what Filipinos should do is not to attack and complain, we should just prove them wrong instead.
Funny how immigrating to a different country gives you a whole new perspective on things.

I thought the Desperate Housewives issue was blown out of proportion. I mean can you believe that some people weren’t satisfied with the apology made by ABC and that they were requesting for like scholarship grants for med students or something? Unbelievable.

Mainly, I think they used the line because they thought it would be something the character would say, perhaps thought it was “edgy,” which is what Desperate Housewives is based on, and maybe didn’t think it would receive that amount of attention. In any case, they’ve apologized, and I really don’t think you can ask for more than that…

I could see why people would be mad about that though.

Posted 06 Oct 2007 at 6:26 pm ¶I admit, I did sign the petition for a public apology. That line was out of nowhere. They did say after the apology that they were going to cut that part out of the episode, but its a little late for that right? ^_^;
Posted 06 Oct 2007 at 8:47 pm ¶Uh, I don’t even remember hearing that line when watching Desperate Housewives.
Posted 07 Oct 2007 at 12:21 am ¶It’s inappropriate, though, I agree.
They’ve apologized, end of issue.

It wasn’t even racist really, just a jab a the medical schools there. TV shows, movies and entertainers make fun of/stereotype countries and nationalities all the time.. I see that with Germany/Germans all the time and it doesn’t bother me, as long as it’s not really vicious and mean.
Posted 09 Oct 2007 at 9:55 pm ¶As a FIlipino myself, the line was like nothing to me. What’s funny here is that Filipinos complain about racism but they themselves are racist not only towards other nationalities but also toward each other, especially if you’re Igorot, Ita, Muslim — something many Filipinos like to deny. It’s prevalent in the Philippine media.
Years ago, in Lucy Torress defunct sitcom, her line was “Ang pangit mo naman, Igorot siguro parents mo”. From the line, it shows if one is ugly, she or he is an Igoreot and every Igorot is ugly.
Days before the DH scandal/issue, our beloved Miriam Santiago said “the Chinese Invented corruption” –right in the presence of the Chinese nationals and the Filipino-Chinese community.
I’m not saying we should condone negative publicity against Filipinos but I find it ironic that many Filipino could not accept that we’re just as racist as them. Many Filipinos want to remove racism against Filipinos but Filipinos are not willing to abandon their racist habits
Maybe it’s just me since I have indigenous blood and and I’ve witness worse racial slurs — from Filipinos themselves.

However When I was doing a google search since few years ago, “diploma mills” websites even appeared on Google’s Sponsored links. I forgot about using other search engines. (My bad ._.)
Posted 16 Oct 2007 at 6:46 pm ¶I recently checked the Wikipedia entry for “diploma mills”. It’s longer now. I skimmed it, and found out that some of them were even based in America.
Quote: “It’s tough being Pinoy.” Quote: “…We should prove them wrong instead.”
*long sigh*
